Grades 5 & 6 – Idioms

Adam Vienneau

The Basketball Team

Today is my first basketball game. I am on the Lakers. My teammates are Andrew, Nathaniel, Jeffrey, Zach, Owen, Cameron, Eric. Our coach told us if we didn’t win this game he would eat his hat. We won the game by ten points, I scored fifteen. Therefore our coach didn’t have to eat his hat. It was raining so hard after my game my little brother said it was raining cats and dogs outside. Finally our tournaments arrived. Eric was so nervous he wouldn’t speak.

“What’s the matter cat got your tongue?” I asked.

World War One

During World War one the people got bombed. All the stuff in the houses was tipping over like a bull in a china shop. But, I guess that’s the way the cookie crumbles. Everyone was shaking in their boots, but we started to fight back. The tanks were out in left field and we were getting attacked, but then we turned the tables on them. That was just the tip of the iceberg. Every person was trying to leave town. A person said, “Go jump in a lake.” And another said, “Go take a hike,” The army people stuck out like a sore thumb.

Worst Year Ever!!!

My name is Becca, I’m going to tell you about a few different things. Like pulling the wool over someone’s eyes. It means to trick a person. When your in a court the judge wears a wig made out of wool.

I think it’s like a video game. Here I’ll show you how. Say that there are two people and a judge in a court room. Each of the people will tell the judge their side of the story. After that the judge will make a wise decision, even if it doesn’t seem like it to the person who lost.

Jumping the Track

Little Flower Stables is a window of opportunity for all horseback riders. Because of this, a beehive of activity surrounds the stables.

Lilly Peterson was a sight for sore eyes before she came to Little Flower, but now she is in tip-top condition. In all areas except for jumping, that is.

So some other riders, Kelly Foss and Kristi Cover tried to teach her.

“This’ll be a piece of cake,” Kelly said. She was the best rider at Little Flower, but it was as clear as mud.

Once upon a time there was a school of 30 fish. There was one fish that was a scaredy cat. He wouldn’t do anything. If you tried to talk to him about it, it’s like you’re talking to a brick wall. He would be gung ho and then he would chicken out. He is a diamond in the rough.

“Jenny, I have butterflies in my stomach!”

“You will be fine, Amy, just don’t worry, you won’t be pushing up daisies any time soon! Trust me, you have enough nuts and bolts to pull off this play!” Jenny said.

Amy is Juliet in the play Romeo and Juliet. Amy’s friend, Jenny, is a curtain person and a stage hand. She is not really into acting. “I really hope she doesn’t get a frog in her throat like she did last year in Rosa Parks, she totally froze!”

“She won’t honey, she is a good actress!” said Jenny’s mom.

Once upon a time there was a dog named Poco who had no clue what idioms were. So he asked his friend, “What in the world are idioms?”

“Well,” said his friend Jojo, “Come with me and I will tell you everything you need to know about idioms.” So that day Poco went with his friend to know all about idioms.

It was a lovely day in Summerville and Brad was running home from school. This, Reader, was very unlike Brad. He usually stopped to smell the roses to postpone doing homework. Today was different. Today his new sister was coming home! His parents decided to adopt a girl roughly two years younger than him. As you can imagine, Brad was very excited.

One day on a ranch they tried to make horse sense of it but they couldn’t. They were trying to figure out where prizewinning horse Renae was, two days away from the race! They better hoof it to find her before the race. But they put the cart before the horse and prepared for the race instead of looking for Renae. One day before the race they changed horses in midstream and frantically searched for Renae. He was running as strong as a horse, but he stayed as stubborn as a mule and looked in the obvious wrong places.

One my way home from school it was raining cats and dogs and I had no umbrella. When I reached home my mom told me I had to catch some Z’s (because it was about 9:00). The next morning I was as mad as a hornet for I do not know what reason, but when I calmed down I was told I was as blind as a bat. I was a bit surprised but I still needed to chow down. After that my dad told me to keep my nose in the grindstone and if I did he would take me for a ride in his souped-up Cadillac. When he was souping up his Cadillac he told me to lend him a hand.
